What makes you take a position when nothing has happened for a week?
Why this matters. Boredom is the least respected source of bad decisions and one of the most reliable. Nobody writes it in a journal, because it does not feel like a reason.
A quiet week. Nothing meets your criteria. And an idea appears which, examined honestly, is a slightly worse version of something you would normally decline.
The confusion underneath
Doing nothing and missing something feel similar from the inside and are entirely different in fact. Waiting is a position — it is the one you take when the conditions you defined are absent. But it produces no record, no event, and no feedback, so nothing about it feels like activity.
A process that generates no evidence of itself is hard to sustain, whatever it is worth.
Why this is not a discipline problem
Calling it discipline moves it into the realm of character, where it cannot be measured or improved. It is better understood as a feedback gap: the correct action here is invisible to you, so the incorrect one wins by being the only thing that leaves a trace.
The fix is to make the correct action leave a trace too.
The artefact
A no-position log. On days you decline, one line: the date, the idea you declined, and which criterion it failed.
This sounds trivial and it changes the week. Declining becomes a thing you did rather than an absence of things. And after a month it becomes evidence — you can look back and ask what would have happened to the ideas you turned down, which is the only honest way to find out whether your criteria are too tight or too loose.
Keep the line short and keep the criterion named. A paragraph becomes a justification, and justifications are written to be read later by someone who wants to agree with them. One line records. And the criterion it names has to be one from your written list: a decline that fails no listed criterion was a mood, and a mood is worth logging too, under its own name.
Try it now
Write today's line, even if it is "nothing declined". A log with empty days is still a log; a log you start on an interesting day is a highlight reel.
