What does it look like when markets stop being interesting?

Why this matters. It is treated as a failure of commitment when it is usually information, and it is the least discussed state in this subject.

Some periods lose their pull. The screen is dull, the research is a chore, and the decisions get made faster because attending to them is unpleasant.

What it usually is not

Not a character problem, and not something to be corrected by resolve. This domain does not frame difficulty as a discipline failure — that framing is the single most reliable way to keep someone stuck, and it is also not what the evidence supports.

What it frequently is

A mismatch of tempo. An approach that needs more attention than the current period of your life has available produces exactly this, and the approach is the adjustable part.

Accumulated exposure. After a long stretch under pressure, reduced engagement is an ordinary response to sustained load rather than a verdict on your interest.

A genuine change of interest. People's interests change. That is allowed, and it is not a failure of anything.

Why it matters operationally

Because decisions made in this state have a signature: faster, less documented, more likely to skip the artefacts. The state itself is not dangerous; the unrecorded decisions taken during it are.

The option between continuing and stopping

Reduce the tempo rather than the practice. Fewer positions, longer checking intervals, a quarterly review instead of a monthly one. The artefacts scale down with the activity and none of them is lost, which is the difference between a practice that fits a quieter year and a practice abandoned — the second one is much harder to restart.

The artefact

An engagement note in the periodic review: one line on whether the practice currently fits the time you have.

It is the only place in this domain where the honest answer might be "reduce activity, or stop for a while" — and having a written place for that answer is what makes it available as an option rather than as a defeat.

Try it now

Answer the line for this month. If the answer surprises you, it has already earned its place.
